SYNTHESIS OF SMART, RESPONSIVE BIOFUNCTIONALIZED POLYMER MATERIALS

Microgel based surfaces as catch and release devices for pathogens

The ability to vary the density of polymer chains and grafted ligand molecules upon temperatures change poses a potentially useful way to control the specific adhesion of cell and bacterial to surfaces. We explore various carbohydrate microgel systems based on LCST polymers (PNIPAM, PCL, OEGs) for capturing and releasing bacteria upon temperature transition.

Control of specific adhesion using responsive polymer brushes

A potentially precise way of remote-controlling the presence of ligands at surfaces would be surface grafted block-copolymers composed of thermosensitive and ligand-functionalized blocks. We explore the specific adhesion and the kinetics of these systems by micro-interferometry using receptor functionalized particles as probes.
