OUR RESEARCH

Scientists are trying to understand how structural and mechanical properties of biointerfaces work synergistically with biomolecular interactions at the interface to achieve certain biological functions such cell communication, development and disease progression.

We set out to investigate these phenomena by quantifying the specific adhesion of stripped down, cell free model systems based on polymers mimicking soft biological interfaces such as the cells glycocalyx. By further understanding how material properties affect specific interactions we are able to design new materials that allow to control biological functions like pathogen adhesion and growth.

Consequently, we focus on two main fields: interrogating specific interactions of soft polymer materials and development of smart, responsive biofunctionalized polymer surfaces.
